3rd Annual Wildcat Rugby Rampage, Nov. 14-15

Nov. 6, 2009 - That’s right ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of year again, when the NEP Wildcats invite some of the best Quad Rugby teams in North America to come battle head to head on Wildcat turf.  This year, November 14th-15th marks the 3rd Annual Wildcat Rugby Rampage and it’s gearing up to be a monster of a tournament.  This year’s attendees include the Magee Eagles from Philidelphia, PA, the NY Warriors, the Connecticut Jammers, and two Canadian teams, the Ottawa Stingers and the Quebec Impact.  The NEP Wildcats will be fielding both the A and B teams in the dual-pool tournament.  Once again the tournament will be held on the Wildcat’s home courts at UNH’s Hamel Rec. Center in Durham, NH.  This excellent venue offers three full-size basketball courts side-by-side, which allows for simultaneous game play on two courts and an equipment/warm-up area on the third.  Come watch and cheer for your favorite quad ruggers and help make this year’s Rampage the best yet!

Wildcats Take 3rd at the Al Youakim Invitational

Oct. 15, 2009 - The NEP Wildcats made a strong showing at their first tournament of the 09’-10’ season taking 3rd place overall in the 2nd Annual Al Youakim Invitational Tournament in Kinnelon, New Jersey October 3rd-4th.

The Wildcats started a long Saturday of intense competition by quickly dominating the CT Jammers on both sides of the ball and ultimately winning the first match by a large margin.  The East Coast Cripplers proved to be a more formidable opponent in the Wildcats second match, keeping their point deficit in the single digits. A deeper bench gave the Wildcats the final advantage in the 46-40 win over the ECC.  Fatigue began to show in the Wildcats 3rd game on Sat. against Philadelphia’s Magee Eagles as the 'Cats tried to keep Paralympian and USQRA team member, Magee Eagle Rob Deller, at bay.  Leveraging Deller’s height and speed, the Eagles secured a 49-44 win over the Wildcats.

Sunday morning the Wildcats matched up against tournament hosts, the NY Warriors, for a hard-hitting fast-paced game that saw plenty of over-turned chairs on both teams.  The Wildcats matched the Warriors goal for goal into the second half of the game when Warrior high-point duo Damon Rozier and Len Lambretta began to capitalize on the Wildcats line changes and turnovers beating the Cats 50-38.

The individual efforts of the Wildcats were as impressive as the collective accomplishment of the team, netting two All-Tournament Awards.  Congratulations to Wildcat Carlos Avila for being named All-Tournament MVP and to Wildcat Bill Bouffard for being named All-Tournament Low-Pointer.

Ready for the 2009-2010 season!

Sept. 11, 2009 – The NEP Wildcats Kicked off the 2009-2010 with the first scheduled practice at UNH’s Hamel Rec. Center last Saturday.  With a jam-packed schedule and an ever-growing roster the Cats will see plenty of tournament action from Canada to Florida this season.  Look for a tourney near you to see the Wildcats live on the court.

Redemption in JAX

Wildcat Mike Wright draws a penalty from JAX's Brooks Bandits
Jan. 9-11, 2009 - The NEP Wildcats had their minds set on redemption after fighting through the last two tournaments short staffed. Fresh off of a holiday rest the Wildcats assembled the A Squad and headed down to Jacksonville, FL for the promise of stiff competition and sunshine. Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital graciously hosted the 2nd Annual Southern Slam with ten teams in attendance split into two divisions. The Wildcats outplayed Division B winning with 20+ point margins against the entire pool and remained undefeated with an impressive 54-40 win over Div. A’s Raleigh, NC Sidewinders.
Returning to the cold and snow in NH, the NEP Wildcat A-Team was happy to present Coach Chandler Bullard with a first-place trophy and Wildcat Mike Wright (2.0) added some more bling to his wall of fame with his All-Tournament Team Best of Class Award. Nice work Mike!!! official results >>
Combat in Conn.
Dec. 6, 2008 - Once again on the road with a skeleton crew, the NEP Wildcats headed to Wallingford, CT to compete against four teams from the Northeast. With only 6.0 points to play, the Cats relied heavily on the award-winning veteran, Adam Ellis (3.0) and award-winning young phenom Mike Wright (2.0) to handle the ball while counting on the low-pointers to pick up the slack and tie up opponents' chairs. This iron-man under-classed strategy did plenty to frustrate the opposing teams but ultimately proved futile against the deeper squads in attendance.
Wildcats Brave the Beast
Nov. 21-23, 2008 - Fresh from hosting the 2nd Annual Rugby Rampage Tournament, the NEP Wildcats headed to Thorofare, NJ to brave the 18th Annual Beast of the East Tournament. The NEP Wildcats knocked, slammed and picked their way through three days of hard-hitting iron-man rugby, fielding only 6.0 classification points and no substitutions with a four man skeleton crew. Despite being undermanned and out classed in every match the Wildcats showed great heart and sportsmanship while holding their own against some of the East Coast’s powerhouse teams. Highlights of the tournament included a close match against Philly’s A squad who topped the Wildcats 39-35 and the Wildcats routing of Jacksonville’s Brooks Bandits 43-18. Congratulations to Wildcat Adam Ellis (3.0) for a well-earned All-Tournament MVP Award!!!
2nd Annual Rugby Rampage Results
Nov. 10, 2008 – After three days of intense Quad Rugby the NEP Wildcat’s clinched the third place trophy with a win against the NY Jets in the 2nd Annual Rugby Rampage hosted by the NEP Wildcats at the University of New Hampshire. Teams traveled from as far as Canada and Florida to compete in round-robin style tournament play. Despite being the Wildcat A-Team’s only loss of the weekend, the highlight of the tourney for the Wildcats was a neck-and-neck Saturday game against the Ottawa Stingers. Spectators, fans and players nearly brought the roof down when Wildcat Mike Wright caught an unbelievable pass on the goal line, inbounded by Wildcat Adam Ellis, to score with less than a second left on the clock pushing the match into overtime play. Well into double overtime, the Stingers were able to capitalize on a two-man penalty advantage to top the Wildcats 30-29 securing their spot in the final game against the Quebec Impact. Once again the Wildcat’s Rugby Rampage was a huge success with both A and B teams showing marked improvement and top of the line sportsmanship. Thank you to all of the teams who traveled to Durham, NH to compete and to those behind the scenes who made everything run so smoothly!!!

The NEP Wildcats give back
On September 13th the NEP Wildcats traveled to Camp Caribou in Winslow Maine to give a Quad Rugby demonstration for the Wounded Warriors Project – Veterans/No Boundaries Weekend. We had the great privilege of holding a demo scrimmage and some Quad Rugby Q&A for the disabled vets, as well as their families, friends and volunteers. Smiles were a plenty as we all worked up a good sweat on the court and by the end of the event some of the spectators were brave enough to get in rugby chairs and bang around with us a bit. Thank you to all who made this demonstration happen. We’re looking forward to doing it again.
Dust off your chairs
The 08’-09’ season is approaching fast and the NEP Wildcats are already scheduled to play in four tournaments around the Northeast with more in the works. Check our schedule for upcoming tournaments and practices and be sure to come by and see some carnage on the court.
Fifteen minutes of fame
The NEP Wildcats were under the spotlight this summer appearing as Quad Rugby extras for the PBS series "Design Squad." Wildcat players scrimmaged on camera along with Kerri Morgan, a St. Louis Rugby Ram and one of the nation’s top female players. Kerri is the subject of a "Design Squad" episode where aspiring young minds attempt to design a remote-controlled dummy rugby chair for her to practice against. The episode of "Design Squad" doesn’t air until the summer of 09’ so you’ll have to wait to see how successful the Squad was.
Looking forward to the 2008-2009 season...
With the 07'-08' season wrapped up and the short off-season upon us the NEP Wildcats look forward to the upcoming quad rugby season with excitement and optimism. Coming off of an excellent building year that saw the Wildcats build a big team diverse with veterans and newcomers as well as a talented coaching and support staff, the Wildcats will spend the summer months focusing on building support and fundraising for the team. Come September the Wildcats will be ready for an increasingly competitive and fun 08'-09' season. Be sure to check our 08'-09' schedule to see the Wildcats bang around at a tournament or practice near you.
